This icon of St Teresa of Jesus shows the saint in a ""deesis"" or interceding posture, and is meant to be part of a large row of standing icons, all bending towards a central figure of Christ in glory, adoring Him and interceding on our behalf in His presence. St Teresa is dressed in the Discalced Carmelite habit of the order she founded. She holds a book of the scriptures, which indicates her status as a doctor of the Church. In fact, she was the first woman to be declared a doctor of the Church. She holds it pressed to her heart in her frank and ardent way, while her other hand is outstretched to ask for grace and mercy. This icon takes the viewer beyond Teresa to the presence of ""His Majesty"", as she loved to call our Lord, Jesus Christ.
