Matthew, Monk. This is the only English biography of St Raphael Kalinowski, a Polish Discalced Carmelite, beatified and canonised by Pope John Paul II. Raphael pursued a career in the Russian army and was trained as a military engineer. It was he who planned the railway from Kiev to Odessa. The Polish insurrection of 1861 claimed his loyalty and he joined the resistance. A death sentence was commuted to ten years in the salt mines in Siberia; hence the title of the book. 180pp PBK
